Dr. Ashanti Foster, NBCT, Academic Dean and AVID Coordinator at Oxon Hill Middle School in Prince George’s County, Maryland has been named Assistant Principal of the Year by the Maryland Association of Secondary School Principals. She is an AVID national staff developer, presenter, and author. Ashanti served as a middle school reading language arts teacher, then AVID Elective teacher for 11 years and, at that time, achieved National Board Certification in 2010.

Nevada Teacher of the Year 
Las Vegas, NV

English teacher Ian Salzman has been teaching at Spring Valley High School in Las Vegas, Nevada for over eight years. During his time there the school has accomplished much,including the honor of being the first and only AVID National Demonstration School in Nevada, an achievement he is proud to have been a part of. Currently Ian serves as his school’s AVID site coordinator and co-founder of its Model United Nations program. He is also co-director of the Southern Nevada Writing Project. Now he has another distinction to add—Ian was recently named Nevada’s Teacher of the Year for the outstanding work he does with his students and in his community. Way to commit to student success, Ian!

AVID Teacher Named 2015 New Mexico Teacher of the Year
Santa Fe, NM

Debra S. Minyard, Pojoaque Valley High School Advanced Placement Music, Band, and AVID teacher, has been selected as the 2015 New Mexico Teacher of the Year.  A 17-year teaching veteran, Debra has been teaching AVID Elective for five years and has been the AVID site coordinator at her school for three years.  Debra’s work and collaboration with her peers has led the AVID team to spread, use and enhance critical learning skills though research-based strategies within the school.

Two AVID/English Teachers Named Sacramento County Teachers of the Year 2015
Sacramento County, CA


Two recently named Sacramento County Teachers of the Year are both avid about AVID. Michelle Bebout is the AVID Coordinator and the 11th grade AVID Elective teacher at Casa Roble High School at Casa Roble High School in Orangevale. Jennifer Walker teaches English and Advanced Placement English at Clarksburg Middle School and Delta High School in Clarksburg. She has been involved with AVID for eight years, teaching the Elective for one.

A selection committee of educational professionals, including previous Teachers of the Year, interviewed local district Teachers of the Year and selected the two finalists. Bebout and Walker are eligible to advance to the statewide competition, in which five teachers will be chosen as California Teachers of the Year. Their names and that of the individual selected as the state’s nominee to the National Teacher of the Year Program will be announced this fall by Tom Torlakson, state superintendent of public instruction.

Teacher of the Year for Midway High School

Lamar Medal Award of Excellence in Education Winner
Richardson, TX

Elizabeth Brown of Richardson High School, Richardson, TX, received the Lamar Medal Award for Excellence in Education from the Masonic Lodges of Texas, specifically of the Dallas area. This award is named after the man who started public education in the State of Texas. Elizabeth was one of several recipients; however, she was the only one whose information was interrupted by vigorous applause when the amount of scholarships her students have received was announced. She was one of three AVID teachers in the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex who were honored, but she was the only one with 97 percent of her seniors being accepted into four-year colleges.

Teacher of the Year for Midway High School

Teacher of the Year for Midway High School
Waco, TX

Nicole Miles, teacher at Midway High School in Texas has been named Teacher of the Year. Nicole teaches Speech along with the AVID elective class. She has been teaching for seven years and the last two have been with AVID. In the past she has earned other recognitions such as Coach of the Year for the district when she was the head soccer coach. This is a big honor for Midway High School and Nicole will soon go on to compete at the Region level.

Ray High School’s Principal of the Year

Ray High School’s Principal of the Year
Corpus Christi, TX

Ray High School Principal Cissy Reynolds-Perez was named High School Principal of the Year by the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals. School officials said it's the first time a Coastal Bend high school principal has received the honor. Reynolds-Perez has been at Ray for six years, long enough for its performance to be her reflection.

AVID teacher awarded the Governing Board Recognition of Excellence Award

AVID Coordinator Named Teacher of the Week
Laurel, MD

Stephen Mellen, AVID Elective teacher and coordinator at Dwight D. Eisenhower Middle School, was named the Prince George’s County Public Schools’ teacher of the week for the week of November 17–23. He has been teaching for 16 years, six of which have been with AVID. In addition to teaching, he is also the after-school programs coordinator, the school’s webmaster, and a professional development lead teacher for language arts. Mellen is on the Technology and School Leadership Committee, and in the summer, works as the curriculum resource center manager for the district’s Office of Curriculum and Instruction. Being the AVID coordinator, he takes pride in the after-school tutoring sessions offered at Eisenhower, where once a week, many of his former AVID students work with his current students to assist with organization, reading, writing, and tutorials.

AVID teacher awarded the Governing Board Recognition of Excellence Award
Hemet, CA

Donna Parker, AVID teacher at West Valley High School, was selected as the October recipient of the Governing Board Recognition and Reward Program Award. She has been teaching for 35 years in the Hemet Unified School District and has taught math along with being involved with other programs, such as the Gifted and Talented Education Program and the district’s Mathematics Curriculum Committee. Her work with the AVID program has helped many students advance to college and led West Valley High School to become nationally recognized as a Demonstration School. Along with the Governing Board Recognition of Excellence Award, Parker was presented with a $500 certificate to be used toward the program of her choice.

AVID Teacher Honored With Golden Apple Award
Prosser, WA

Math Instructional Coach Connie Hachtel has been awarded the Golden Apple Award for her outstanding work at Housel Middle School in Prosser, Washington. She has brought on many new approaches to teaching math, including “Math 360,” where more than 300 of the school’s students receive individual help and small-group instruction, which has allowed students to excel. When AVID was first introduced, Connie volunteered to be the site coordinator. Teaching the AVID Elective class has given her the platform to ready her students for college success.

County Teacher Named State Teacher Of Year
Baltimore, MD

A Baltimore County English teacher is Maryland's Teacher of the Year. Sean McComb, who teaches at Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts in Dundalk received the honor Friday night at a ceremony at Martin's West. McComb was one of seven finalists among entries from Baltimore City and all 23 counties. He was named Baltimore County's Teacher of the Year in May. In his acceptance speech, McComb commended the AVID program he leads at Patapsco. “It’s the little program that could,” McComb said. McComb will be among the teachers honored at the White House next spring, and will compete for the National Teacher of the Year.

Wells Fargo Receives the AVID Center/Union-Tribune Community Service Award
San Diego, CA

AVID Center and U-T San Diego joined forces in 2000 and created the San Diego Community Service Award to recognize organizations that demonstrate commitment to improving the lives of our youth in the San Diego community. This year, Wells Fargo was recognized for their philanthropic work in education across the country, as well as in San Diego. AVID is very grateful for the support that Wells Fargo has provided to AVID Center and to AVID programs in schools throughout the country to support professional development for educators and tutors for the AVID Elective. In 2012, Wells Fargo invested a total of $315.8 million in 19,500 nonprofits and schools nationwide, increasing their 2011 contribution by 48 percent. They also provided 1.5 million volunteer hours. Victor Perez, Vice President of Wells Fargo Business Banking, accepted the award. Congratulations and thank you to Wells Fargo!

At Anniston High, new AVID class prepares students for post-grad life

Founder of AVID Center, Mary Catherine Swanson, surprised Jim Nelson at the last General Session of the Summer Institute in San Diego with the AVID Founder’s Award. Jim was chosen to succeed Mary Catherine as AVID’s Executive Director in 2006, when Mary Catherine retired from the AVID Center. Jim spent the next seven years ensuring AVID’s future, taking AVID from 3,000 AVID schools serving 200,000 students to 4,900 schools reaching more than 700,000 students. Jim will be retiring from AVID Center at the end of 2013.

Michele, currently the Director of Program Quality and Professional Development, has been with AVID since 1999 and will be retiring later this year. Mary Catherine remarked, “Michele indeed exemplifies what is meant by the individual determination in AVID.”

AVID helps Twin Cities teens become first generation college students

AVID Founder’s Scholarship
San Diego, CA

This year’s AVID Founder’s Scholarship was given to Fausto Bay from Sweetwater High School, in the Sweetwater Union High School District in California. Fausto, a four-year AVID student, took seven Advanced Placement® classes and graduated with a 3.7 grade point average. He will major in Business and Economics at the University of California in Los Angeles and aspires to become an entrepreneur. Fausto told the audience of more than 2,000 educators, “The obstacles I have faced in order to stand here in your presence have strengthened me and provided me with the determination to set high goals and to believe in myself. Si se puede!”
