AVID Center Employees Scholarship Fund
Largely employee-funded, the AVID Center Employees Scholarship is awarded to students who represent the quintessential AVID Elective student– one who has overcome personal obstacles through sheer determination and is now moving on to college. The funds are to be used for college-related expenses, including tuition, books, or housing.
The scholarship was originally named in honor of Julie Elliott, who had leadership woven into the fabric of her life. In her early years, she was Chair for Student Body Activities and a Stanford University graduate. Her belief in education as the door to equity and opportunity was the guiding principle of her career. For many years she was an English teacher and administrator in the San Diego Unified School District. When Crawford High School was named an AVID demonstration school, Julie was their principal. In 1999, she moved to AVID Center as the Associate California State Director. She continued to expand her AVID leadership role across the state and nation as California Division Director and National Director of AVID Demonstration Schools. Julie brought laughter and a love of life with her to these roles. Her commitment to students and colleagues, her zest for life, and her impact on our nation's education in her legacy. She will be deeply missed.
