The AVID National Conference is a forum to discuss and share best practices on opening access to rigorous curriculum for all. Participants include superintendents, school board members, district and site administrators, and other educational leaders.

Dr. Sandy Husk, Chief Executive OfficerOpening Keynote by Dr. Sandy Husk
Chief Executive Officer, AVID Center


Dr. Sandy Husk joined AVID Center as Chief Executive Officer in January 2014 and brings with her more than 17 years of experience implementing the AVID College Readiness System. During her 36 years serving schools, she held a variety of leadership positions, with nearly 18 years in the role of superintendent. Most recently, Dr. Husk served as the superintendent of Salem-Keizer Public Schools in Oregon, where she led impressive reforms that positively impacted student achievement. She is a proven instructional leader with broad and deep experience helping students—especially students who have frequently been underserved and those from challenging backgrounds—succeed academically. 

Dr. Husk has served in many state and national leadership roles including the National School Public Relations Association, Educational Research and Development Institute, College Board Advisors, and the American Association of School Administrators. 

Dr. Husk earned a Ph.D. in Administration, Curriculum and Supervision from the University of Colorado, Denver; an M.A. in Guidance and Counseling from the University of Colorado, Boulder; and a B.S. in Elementary Education from the University of Georgia, Athens. Her postdoctoral study includes work at Columbia and Harvard. 



Dr. Freeman HrabowskiKeynote by Dr. Freeman A. Hrabowski
President of University of Maryland, Baltimore County

Dr. Freeman A. Hrabowski, President of UMBC (University of Maryland, Baltimore County) since 1992, is a consultant on science and math education to national agencies, universities, and school systems. He was recently named by President Obama to chair the newly created President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for African Americans. He also chaired the National Academies committee that produced the recent report, Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation: America’s Science and Technology Talent at the Crossroads. 

Named one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World by TIME (2012) and one of America’s Best Leaders by U.S. News & World Report (2008), he also received TIAA-CREF’s Theodore M. Hesburgh Award for Leadership Excellence (2011), the Carnegie Corporation’s Academic Leadership Award (2011), and the Heinz Award (2012) for contributions to improving the human condition. 

UMBC has been recognized as a model for academic innovation and inclusive excellence by such publications as U.S. News & World Report, which for the past five years has ranked UMBC the #1 “Up-and-Coming” university in the nation.


Special Guest Speaker Sean McComb
2014 National Teacher of the Year

Sean McComb, a high school AVID and English teacher from Maryland, is the 64th National Teacher of the Year. McComb teaches at Patapsco High School & Center for the Arts in Baltimore, where he has spent his eight-year teaching career. In addition to teaching, McComb supports his Patapsco colleagues through coaching and training as the school's Staff Development Teacher. He also served as a curriculum writer for the school system and an adjunct instructor in Education and Writing at Towson University.

Beyond the classroom, McComb demonstrates his commitment to his students in many ways-including chaperoning students to and hosting students from China through the Baltimore County China Cultural Exchange Program, giving up his spring break to take students on college bus tours, and coaching indoor track and tennis. He also actively serves his community and works to instill a sense of service with his students.  McComb and his students have been involved in services projects such as: planting trees in the community, cleaning up a local creek, serving meals to the homeless and delivering donations for Neighbors in Need at a local church.  McComb holds a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and
a Master of Education in English Education from the University of Pittsburgh, as well as a Certificate in School Improvement
Leadership from Goucher College.

Dr. David Conley is the author of  the new book, Getting Ready for College, Careers, and the Common Core: What Every Educator Should Know. In this session, learn about Dr. Conley’s Four Keys to College and Career Readiness and a system of assessments to get students ready, whether it be for college, careers or the Common Core.

Is your AVID Vision too Limited? CANCELLED
Greg Darnieder, Senior Advisor on College Access to US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education, Washington, D.C.
This session will raise questions as to the alignment of district/school mission statements with that of AVID’s. The focus will be on research-based college access data points and the extent to which they are driving school/district change, as well as to what extent the data is being utilized to achieve postsecondary goals. In addition, we will build out a secondary school college/career readiness framework by grade level starting in 6th grade and continuing through the first year of college.

  • University/college teams of three or more receive $100 off registration per attendee.
  • All school board members/Board of Regents members receive 50% off the registration rate.
  • Demo schools receive 50% off the registration rate (this includes the district director).*
  • The principal, plus at least two other participants from the same school (for a total of at least three attendees; must include the principal), receive $100 off each registration.*
